Wir brechen bei dieser Rezension einfach mal eine Regel. Um das komplexe Bild hinter der Geschichte von Glyph zu verstehen müsst ihr einfach den offiziellen Part des Labels lesen…

Die Männer von Glyph sind alle seit fünfzehn Jahren im nordamerikanischen Heavy-Metal-Underground unterwegs, wobei jeder seinen eigenen beeindruckenden Lebenslauf aufgebaut hat: Jeff mit den epischen kanadischen Warlords Gatekeeper, Rav mit seinem außergewöhnlichen Projekt Ravenous, Rob und Darin mit den kultigen Seattle NWOTHM-Favoriten Greyhawk und Skeletor, neben vielen anderen. Doch nach einem langen, harten Kampf auf den unteren Ausläufern des Musikgeschäfts sind Glyph angekommen, was diese Musiker sofort in die Umlaufbahn schießt. Dabei handelt es sich nicht nur um eine Heavy-Metal-Band, sondern um eine intergalaktische Söldnertruppe, die mit ihrem Raumschiff, der VSS Dragonlord, von einem sterbenden Planeten flieht. Es ist klar, dass Glyph nicht nur Songs schreiben, sondern Welten erschaffen.
"Es ist eine allumfassende Welt, in der wir jedes Element des Heavy Metal, das uns gefällt, ausleben dürfen", schwärmt Rav alias Captain Voltaire. "Das ist eine gute Grundlage für die Definition von Glyph; es geht nicht nur um die Crew, sondern um die ganze Marke. Glyph ist wie Marvel!"
Sie denken also in großen Dimensionen, aber das ursprüngliche Konzept war liebenswert bescheiden: "Ich hatte die Idee einer geradlinigen, aber lustigen Power-Metal-Band", erklärt Jeff. "Musik für Theater, Clubs, Festivals, um die Leute in Bewegung zu bringen. Hoher Spaßfaktor, das ist das ultimative Ziel." Nachdem Jeff die massenbindende Kraft europäischer Metal-Festivals wie Wacken und Bloodstock erlebt hatte, machte er es sich zur Aufgabe, diese Atmosphäre in seinem Hinterhof in Vancouver nachzubilden - und schaffte es auf Anhieb. "Ich fing an, so schnell wie möglich Ideen zu entwickeln und mit einem anderen Ansatz zu schreiben, als ich es normalerweise tue. Ich ließ sie an den anderen Jungs abprallen, und es kam wirklich schnell zusammen."
Nachdem eine Suchaktion Rob und Darin hervorgebracht hatte, war Rav der letzte, der sich anschloss - vor allem dank eines zufälligen Fluges. "Es war nur, weil Jeff einen Zwischenstopp in meiner Stadt hatte und einen Platz zum Schlafen brauchte!" Rav lacht. "Er erzählte mir, dass er diese Band gründete, und ich sagte, ich würde versuchen, für sie zu singen." Nachdem der charismatische Frontmann auf Anhieb Honour Pride Glory zum Besten gegeben hatte, überließ Jeff alle seine Songs Ravs einzigartigem stimmlichen und lyrischen Stempel.
Es ist eine Sache, wenn sich ein Line-up so reibungslos zusammenfügt, aber wenn ein ganzes erzählerisches Konzeptalbum durch reinen Zufall entsteht, fühlt es sich an, als ob etwas Magisches vor sich geht. "Als wir die Songs zusammenstellten, schien es, als würde sich eine Art Story entwickeln, was völlig unbeabsichtigt war", betont Rav. "Als wir die Songs schrieben, war unser Maßstab: Könnten betrunkene Deutsche Spaß daran haben, sie zu singen?!" lacht er. "Aber wir fanden, dass die Songs einen kohärenten Bogen aus den Themen formulierten. Ich habe noch nie an einem Projekt teilgenommen, bei dem ich die Texte geschrieben habe und dann festgestellt habe, dass sie eine ziemlich coole Geschichte ergeben!"
Nachdem Glyph aus der Ferne eine Reihe von faustbrechenden Euro-Krachern im Stile von Blind Guardian, Sabaton und Gloryhammer zusammengebastelt hatten, wurden sie auf dem Festival Mad With Power in Wisconsin im Jahr 2023 auf die Welt losgelassen, wobei die Bandmitglieder ihre CDs in die Menge warfen. "Am nächsten Tag bekamen wir einen Anruf mit dem Angebot, auf die Alestorm/Elvenking-Tour zu gehen", sagt Rav. "Es ging also sehr schnell voran! Aber als Musiker wissen wir, dass wir uns eine Woche vor der Tour zusammensetzen und sagen können: "Okay, wir spielen zum ersten Mal zusammen, lasst uns diese Songs ausfeilen, und dann gehen wir auf Tour und verpassen keinen einzigen Beat."
Von all den freudigen Details in der reißerischen Hintergrundgeschichte der Band hat eine Antipathie die Online-Power-Metal-Gemeinde besonders aufgewühlt: "Wir sind die erste Power-Metal-Band, die Drachen verdammt noch mal verabscheut und verachtet", verkündet Rav. "Es ist die einfachste Sache, die ich mir ausgedacht habe, und die Leute sind wütend. Verdammte Drachensympathisanten!" Jeff pflichtet ihm bei: "Die Leute vergessen immer wieder, dass der Held den Drachen tötet, Leute!" Da ihr Weltenbau-Eifer noch in den Kinderschuhen steckt und es noch so viele Drachen zu erschlagen gilt, kann man sich nur wundern, welche Möglichkeiten sich für die Zukunft von Glyph ergeben.
Kommen wir nun zum Abschluss zu unserer eigenen Meinung. Wer Freund oder auch Feind von Bands wie bereits genannt, Sabaton, Powerwolf, Alestorm oder gar so wilden Gruppierungen wie den Grail Knights oder Victorious ist, der kommt hier voll auf seine Kosten oder läßt gleich gänzlich die Finger von Glyph. Für alle Liebhaber dieser Art von Powermetal, sei diese Band und ihr Debüt nur wärmstens empfohlen. Hier stimmt einfach von Anfang bis Ende alles. Der Sound, der Rhythmus, die Spielfreude, Texte und die dazu geschmiedete Story. Was will man mehr? Na ganz einfach, mehr als nur neun Songs… wir wollen mehr von Glyph. Und das sowohl Live als auch auf Tonträgern. Von uns bekommt dieser fantastische Newcomer schon jetzt das Privileg besonders Wertvoll, die volle Punktzahl und eine ganz klare Kaufempfehlung ! We're going to break a rule with this review. To understand the complex picture behind the story of Glyph you just have to read the official part of the label...

The men of Glyph have all been grinding away in the North American heavy metal underground for fifteen years, each building his own impressive CV: Jeff with epic Canadian warlords Gatekeeper, Rav with his extraordinary Ravenous project, Rob and Darin with cult Seattle NWOTHM favourites Greyhawk and Skeletor, among many others. However, after a long, hard struggle up the lower foothills of the music business, Glyph has arrived, instantly shooting these musicians into orbit. This is not just a heavy metal band, this is a crew of intergalactic mercenaries escaping a dying planet in their spaceship, the VSS Dragonlord. Clearly, Glyph aren’t just writing songs, they’re building worlds.
“It’s an all-encompassing world where we get to take every element of heavy metal that we enjoy, and we’re allowed to do them all,” enthuses Rav, aka Captain Voltaire. “It creates a good canvas for what the definition of Glyph really is; it’s not just the crew, it’s this whole brand. Glyph is like Marvel!”
So they’re thinking big, but the original concept was endearingly humble: “I had this idea for a straight but fun power metal band,” explains Jeff. “Music for theatres, clubs, festivals, for getting people moving. High fun factor, that’s the ultimate goal.” Having experienced the mass bonding power of European metal festivals like Wacken and Bloodstock, Jeff set himself the task of recreating that atmosphere in his Vancouver backyard – and nailed it first try. “I started cranking out ideas as quickly as I could, writing with a different approach than I normally do. I bounced them off the other guys, and it came together really fast.”
After a headhunting spree yielded Rob and Darin, Rav was the last to join – thanks largely to a fortuitous plane ride. “It was just because Jeff had a stopover in my city and needed somewhere to sleep!” Rav laughs. “He told me he was cooking up this band, I said I’ll try singing for it.” After the charismatic frontman straightaway aced Honour Pride Glory, Jeff handed all his songs over to Rav’s unique vocal and lyrical stamp.
It’s one thing for a line-up to slot into place so smoothly, but when an entire narrative concept album falls into place by pure chance, it feels like something magical is going on. “As we put all the songs together, it seemed to take a bit of a story arc, which was completely unintentional,” stresses Rav. “When we wrote the songs, our benchmark was: could drunken Germans enjoy singing it?!” he laughs. “But we found that the songs formulated a coherent arc based on the themes. I’ve never been in a project where I’ve written the lyrics and then found they make a pretty cool story!”
Having remotely pieced together a raft of fist-raising Euro-style bangers in the rich vein of Blind Guardian, Sabaton and Gloryhammer, Glyph were launched upon Earth at Wisconsin festival Mad With Power in 2023, the playback listening party accompanied by bandmates lobbing their CDs into the crowd. “The next day we got a call offering us to go on the Alestorm/Elvenking tour,” says Rav. “So it ramped up very quickly! But as musicians we know we can get together a week before the tour and be like, alright, first time playing together, let’s nail out these songs, and then hit the road and not miss a beat.”
Of all the joyous details in the band’s lurid backstory, one antipathy has particularly exercised the online power metal community: “We are the first power metal band to fuckin’ loathe and despise dragons!” proclaims Rav. “It’s the simplest thing that I thought up, and people are enraged. Bloody dragon sympathisers!” Jeff concurs: “People keep forgetting, the hero kills the dragon, guys!” With their world-building zeal still in its infancy, and so many more dragons to slay, one can only wonder at the possibilities for Glyph’s future.
Finally, let's come to our own opinion. If you're a friend or foe of bands like Sabaton, Powerwolf, Alestorm or even wild groups like Grail Knights or Victorious, you'll get your money's worth here or you can leave Glyph alone. For all lovers of this kind of power metal, this band and their debut are highly recommended. Everything is just right from start to finish. The sound, the rhythm, the joy of playing, the lyrics and the accompanying story. What more could you want? Quite simply, more than just nine songs... we want more from Glyph. Both live and on record. We have already given this fantastic newcomer the privilege of particularly valuable, full marks and a very clear recommendation to buy! So don't wait long, buy it, listen to it and get started...
