Nun was soll man schon großartig über eine Band sagen, über die bereits alles berichtet wurde? Eine Band, die Musikgeschichte geschrieben hat, die eine ganze Szene mitgeprägt und ach so viele Künstler inspirierte und inspiriert. Judas Priest heißen nicht ohne Grund The Gods of Metal. Neunzehn Studioalben, unzählige Compilationen und Live Alben pflastern den Weg dieser Band, die ihre Gründung bereits im Jahr 1969, damals noch als Blues-Band, fand, und die aus dem Sänger Alan Atkins, dem Bassisten Bruno Stapenhill, dem Schlagzeuger John Partige und dem Gitarristen John Perry bestand. Perry starb noch im gleichen Jahr durch Suizid und wurde durch Ernie Chataway ersetzt, der 2014 an Krebs verstarb. Diese Band fiel jedoch nach einigen Jahren wieder auseinander. Der spätere Band-Gitarrist, Kenneth „K. K.“ Downing aus West Bromwich bei Birmingham, wurde nach einem Vorspiel zunächst abgelehnt. Nach der Auflösung der ersten Band stieg der Sänger Alan Atkins in Downings Gruppe Freight ein, der auch Bassist Ian Hill angehörte. Da Downing zuvor beabsichtigte, in der Band von Atkins zu spielen, benannte sich die Band um und verwendete von nun an den Namen Judas Priest. Der Name entstammte Bob Dylans Lied The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest vom Album John Wesley Harding.
Die Besetzung mit dem Schlagzeuger John Ellis tourte bis zum Jahr 1973 ohne Plattenvertrag durch Großbritannien, bis Atkins wieder ausstieg. Lediglich zwei Songs nahm die Band in dieser Formation auf, Good Time Woman und We’ll Stay Together. Sue Halford, die Freundin von Ian Hill, brachte nach Atkins’ Ausstieg 1973 ihren Bruder Rob Halford als Sänger und John Hinch (1947–2021) als Schlagzeuger zur Band, die zuvor gemeinsam in der Band Hiroshima gespielt hatten. 1974 stieß Glenn Tipton als Gitarrist zu Judas Priest. Diese Besetzung mit den Gitarristen K. K. Downing und Glenn Tipton, dem Bassisten Ian Hill und dem Sänger Rob Halford hat das Bild von Judas Priest maßgeblich geprägt. Das erste Album Rocka Rolla erschien im Jahr 1974 unter dem Independent-Label Gull Records und enthielt teilweise Songs, welche noch während der Zusammenarbeit mit Atkins entstanden waren, aber von Rob Halford komplett neu eingesungen wurden. Judas Priest spielte zu dieser Zeit Blues und Rock. Von nun an wandte man sich dem Heavy Metal zu… der Rest ist Geschichte…
Nun im Jahre 2024 präsentieren Judas Priest also ihr neunzehntes Langeisen. Und selbiges steigt gleich mal mit drei aufeinander folgenden Rockgranaten ein. Panik Attack, The Serpend and the King sowie der Titelgebende Song, Invinceble Shield, zeigen dem Hörer gleich von Beginn an wo die Priester den Hammer hingehängt haben. Weiter geht es mit drei Nummern, die im altbekannten Judas Priest Sound, hart und etwas tragend daherkommen. Die Namen dieser eins A Nummern lauten, Devil in Disguise, Gates of Hell und Crown of Horns. Es folgt die Halsbrecherische Nummer, As Got is my Witness, gefolgt von einer Richie Faulkner Komposition, namens, Trail by Fire. Escape from Reality zeichnet sich besonders durch das perfekte Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Bandmitglieder sowie der enthaltenen Solis aus. Sons of Thunder, ein feiner Rocker folgt und sorgt für Bewegung in den müden Knochen. Giants in the Sky, Fight of your Life sowie Vicious Circle kommen als klassische Judas Priest Nummern daher, bevor die Priester mit der Ballade The Lodger ein mit vierzehn neuen Songs umfassendes und verdammt starkes Album schließen.
Hier kann es nur ein Urteil geben. Und dies muss einfach Großartig lauten. Wie immer oder sagen wir fast immer, trifft der Ausspruch, The Priest is back auch bei Invinceble Shield, den berühmten Nagel voll auf den Kopf. Und so freuen wir uns um so mehr, auf die kommenden Konzerte von Judas Priest!

Well, what can you say about a band that has already been written about? A band that has written music history, helped shape an entire scene and inspired and continues to inspire so many artists. Judas Priest are not called The Gods of Metal for no reason. Nineteen studio albums, countless compilations and live albums pave the way for this band, which was founded in 1969 as a blues band and consisted of singer Alan Atkins, bassist Bruno Stapenhill, drummer John Partige and guitarist John Perry. Perry died by suicide in the same year and was replaced by Ernie Chataway, who died of cancer in 2014. However, this band fell apart again after a few years. The band's later guitarist, Kenneth "K. K." Downing from West Bromwich near Birmingham, was initially rejected after an audition. After the break-up of the first band, singer Alan Atkins joined Downing's group Freight, which also included bassist Ian Hill. As Downing had previously intended to play in Atkins' band, the band renamed itself and from then on used the name Judas Priest. The name came from Bob Dylan's song The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest from the album John Wesley Harding.
The line-up with drummer John Ellis toured the UK without a record deal until 1973, when Atkins left again. The band only recorded two songs in this formation, Good Time Woman and We'll Stay Together. After Atkins' departure in 1973, Sue Halford, Ian Hill's girlfriend, brought her brother Rob Halford into the band as singer and John Hinch (1947-2021) as drummer, who had previously played together in the band Hiroshima. In 1974, Glenn Tipton joined Judas Priest as guitarist. This line-up with guitarists K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill and vocalist Rob Halford has significantly shaped the image of Judas Priest. The first album Rocka Rolla was released in 1974 under the independent label Gull Records and contained some songs that had been written during the collaboration with Atkins, but were completely re-recorded by Rob Halford. Judas Priest were playing blues and rock at the time. From then on they turned to heavy metal... the rest is history...
Now in 2024, Judas Priest present their nineteenth longplayer. And it kicks off with three consecutive rock grenades. Panic Attack, The Serpend and the King and the title track, Invinceble Shield, show the listener right from the start where the Priests have hung the hammer. The album continues with three songs in the well-known Judas Priest sound, hard and a bit heavy. The names of these one A numbers are Devil in Disguise, Gates of Hell and Crown of Horns. This is followed by the breakneck number, As Got is my Witness, followed by a Richie Faulkner composition called, Trail by Fire. Escape from Reality is characterized in particular by the perfect interplay between the individual band members and the solos it contains. Sons of Thunder, a fine rocker follows and gets the tired bones moving. Giants in the Sky, Fight of your Life and Vicious Circle are classic Judas Priest numbers, before the Priests close a damn strong album with fourteen new songs and the ballad The Lodger.
There can only be one verdict here. And that has to be simply great. As always, or let's say almost always, the saying "The Priest is back" hits the nail on the head with Invinceble Shield. And so we are all the more looking forward to Judas Priest's upcoming concerts!
