Chris Harms, bekannt als Frontmann der Band Lord of the Lost und erfolgreicher Produzent bekannter Künstler wie Joachim Witt, präsentiert mit "1980" ein Solo-Projekt, mit dem er sich in erster Linie einen lang ersehnten persönlichen Traum erfüllt. Fern ab vom gewohnten rockigen Sound, vereint "1980" Electro-, Wave- und Gothic-Anteile zu einem atmosphärischen Synthesizer-Mix, der die musikalisch einzigartigen 80er Jahre wiederaufleben lässt. "1980" entführt somit zu einer authentischen, spannenden und nostalgischen Zeitreise in ein absolutes Kult-Jahrzehnt.
Chris sagt selbst zu "1980": "Wenn ich gezwungen wäre, dieses Album in eine Schublade zu packen und diese zu beschriften, dann stünde dort vermutlich ‘eine merkwürdige aber gelungene Mischung aus Depeche Mode, Modern Talking und Sandra mit der Stimme von Chris Harms, aber mit weniger Dauerwelle und Vokuhila.‘"
Und damit trifft er es ganz gut: Stilechte Retro-Synthie-Rhythmen erinnern an Bands wie Alphaville oder a-ha und laden sofort zum Tanzen ein. Dabei trägt Harms markante Stimme, die sowohl kraftvoll als auch verletzlich ist, die 11 Songs mit einer Intensität, die sofort fesselt. Nachdenklichkeit und Leichtigkeit halten sich die Waage und zeugen von der Vielschichtigkeit des Künstlers. Die Texte sind tiefgründig und reflektieren sowohl die Herausforderungen als auch die Freuden des Lebens. Egal ob mit poppigen Songs wie "I Love You", "She Called Me Diaval" und "Parallax", oder mit melancholischen Titeln wie "Past Pain" und "May This Be Your Last Battlefield" – mit "1980" zeigt Harms seine Fähigkeit, verschiedene Genres zu kombinieren und somit eine dynamische Klanglandschaft zu schaffen.
Auch zwei Duette sind auf "1980" vertreten – zum einen "Madonna Of The Night", bei dem sich Sven Friedrich von Solar Fake die Ehre gab, und zum anderen leiht Ronan Harris von VNV Nation "The Gray Maschines" seine einzigartige Stimme.
Auch optisch macht das Album etwas her. Die Fotografien und Videos, die vom talentierten Lennard Schmidt stammen, unterstreichen den knallbunten Retro-Style von "1980" und hätten so auch direkt in den 80ern vertreten sein können.
Insgesamt ist "1980" ein gelungenes Solo-Debüt von Chris Harms, das sowohl musikalisch als auch emotional absolut überzeugt. Es vereint die nostalgische Reise mit frischen und modernen Klängen. Harms beweist, dass er auch ein starker Solokünstler sein kann. Doch für alle, die jetzt Angst um die Zukunft von Lord of the Lost haben: Chris und die Jungs haben nicht vor die Band weniger intensiv zu betreiben, geschweige denn aufzulösen. "1980" ist ein wahr gewordener Herzenswunsch, der nicht nur das musikalische Portfolio von Chris Harms erweitert, sondern auch eine intimere und persönlichere Seite von ihm zeigt. Harms schafft es, nostalgische Gefühle zu wecken, ohne dabei in Kitsch abzudriften. Insbesondere Fans klassischen 80s-Synth-Pops werden dieses Werk zu schätzen wissen, aber auch jüngere Generationen (wie ich als Millennial) dürfen sich durchaus angesprochen fühlen. "1980" ist ein Muss für alle, die die Magie der 80er Jahre in einem zeitgemäßen Gewand erleben möchten.

Chris himself says of “1980”: “If I were forced to put this album in a drawer and label it, it would probably say ‘a strange but successful mixture of Depeche Mode, Modern Talking and Sandra with the voice of Chris Harms, but with less perm and mullet’.”
And he hits the nail on the head: stylish retro-synth rhythms are reminiscent of bands such as Alphaville or a-ha and immediately invite you to dance. Harms' distinctive voice, which is both powerful and vulnerable, carries the 11 songs with an intensity that is immediately captivating. Thoughtfulness and lightness balance each other out and testify to the artist's complexity. The lyrics are profound and reflect both the challenges and the joys of life. Whether with poppy songs such as “I Love You”, “She Called Me Diaval” and “Parallax”, or melancholy tracks such as “Past Pain” and “May This Be Your Last Battlefield” - with “1980” Harms shows his ability to combine different genres and thus create a dynamic soundscape.
There are also two duets on “1980” - firstly “Madonna Of The Night”, on which Sven Friedrich from Solar Fake did the honors, and secondly Ronan Harris from VNV Nation lends his unique voice to “The Gray Maschines”.
The album is also visually impressive. The photographs and videos by the talented Lennard Schmidt underline the brightly colored retro style of “1980” and could have been taken straight from the 80s.
All in all, “1980” is a successful solo debut from Chris Harms that is absolutely convincing both musically and emotionally. It combines a nostalgic journey with fresh and modern sounds. Harms proves that he can also be a strong solo artist. But for all those who are now worried about the future of Lord of the Lost: Chris and the boys have no intention of running the band any less intensively, let alone disbanding it. “1980” is a heartfelt wish come true, which not only expands Chris Harms' musical portfolio, but also shows a more intimate and personal side of him. Harms manages to evoke nostalgic feelings without drifting into kitsch. Fans of classic 80s synth-pop in particular will appreciate this work, but younger generations (like me as a millennial) may also feel addressed. “1980” is a must for anyone who wants to experience the magic of the 80s in a contemporary guise.
